Freethinker Funeral Services in Singapore.

A personal, secular farewell shaped around the life, character, and wishes of your loved one. We help your family design a service that feels true to who they were, free from religious obligation but full of meaning.

A farewell shaped around the person, not a tradition.

A freethinker funeral is shaped entirely by the family. No fixed religious structure, no required rites, no prescribed format. Instead, the service is a personal reflection of who your loved one was: the music they loved, the people who shaped them, the small moments they were known for, the values they lived by. At 1-Funeral Group, we work closely with your family to design a farewell that feels true to the person, whether that means a quiet gathering, a celebration of life, or a simple committal followed by reflection.

Common formats

Freethinker funerals in Singapore take many forms. Some of the most common:

  • A traditional wake without religious services. A gathering of family and friends across one or two days, with eulogies, photo displays, and shared remembrance, but no religious elements
  • A celebration of life. A more upbeat, life-celebrating gathering with music, slideshows, food, and stories that meant something to the deceased
  • A simple memorial service. A single day or evening service with eulogies, music, and a final farewell, followed by committal
  • Direct cremation followed by memorial later. The deceased is cremated quietly, and the family holds a memorial gathering at a date of their choosing, sometimes weeks or months later when distant family can travel
  • A short ceremony at the crematorium only. For families who prefer minimal formality, a brief ceremony with eulogies and music immediately before cremation

We will help you decide what fits your family. There is no wrong format.

How we help design the service

This is where freethinker funerals differ most from religious ones. Without a fixed liturgy or priest, the family has full freedom over the day, which is sometimes liberating and sometimes overwhelming. Our role is to make the open canvas feel manageable.

Building the order of service

For families new to designing a secular service, we will guide you through the structure: opening, eulogies, music interludes, family tributes, closing reflections. So the day flows naturally without feeling either too formal or too unstructured.

Music and slideshows

Music can be anything that mattered to your loved one. We handle the audio setup, help curate playlists from your suggestions, and produce slideshow tributes from photos you provide. Live musicians can be arranged if you prefer.

Eulogies and tributes

Family members or close friends typically share eulogies. We can suggest a structure if helpful, perhaps three or four speakers building toward a personal closing, and assist with timing if anyone is nervous about speaking publicly.

Personal touches

Photographs, favourite books, hobbies, sports jerseys, handwritten letters, items that captured who they were. We help arrange these into a display that gives guests a real sense of the person they came to honour.

A celebrant, if you would like one

If your family prefers not to lead the service yourselves, we can arrange a non-religious celebrant, an officiant trained in secular ceremonies, to guide the day. For smaller services, our funeral director can also lead opening and closing remarks if you would like a familiar presence.

How it works

Freethinker funerals in Singapore can run anywhere from a single day to two or three days, depending on what your family wants.

Day 1

Receiving and preparation.

We collect the deceased from the hospital or home, prepare the body, and set up the wake venue with photographs, flowers, and the items you choose to display.

Days 2 to second-last

Wake or gathering.

Family and friends visit. There is no fixed schedule. Many families hold an informal evening gathering with eulogies and music; others keep it quieter and let visitors come and go throughout the day.

Final day

Memorial service and committal.

The formal service is held, with eulogies, music, and tributes. The procession then moves to the crematorium for cremation.

For families who prefer something simpler, we can arrange single-day services that combine a brief gathering with the committal. We can also arrange direct cremation followed by a separate memorial gathering held at a date of your choosing.

A note on mixed-faith and culturally rooted families

Many Singaporean families have mixed-faith members or cultural roots they would like to acknowledge without holding a religious service. We can incorporate elements of cultural heritage, traditional dress, ancestral acknowledgement, or particular customs into a freethinker service without making the day religious. Tell us what feels meaningful, and we will help shape the service to include it.

FAQ

How quickly can you respond if we call right now?

We answer the line 24 hours a day, every day of the year. A funeral director will be with your family within the hour, anywhere in Singapore.

Yes, this is the most common reason families come to us for freethinker funerals. We will sit with you, ask about your loved one, and help you decide on the format, the order of service, the music, and the tributes. You bring the memories. We bring the structure.

Absolutely. A wake is just a gathering of family and friends to remember and pay respects. It does not require religious services, prayers, or a religious leader. Many families keep the wake informal, with photos, music playing softly, and time for visitors to sit, talk, and share stories.

Of course. Many Singaporean families are mixed-faith. We can incorporate prayers, a short scripture reading, or a moment of silence at certain points without framing the whole service religiously. Tell us what would feel right for your family and we will help shape it.

Yes. Music can be anything from classical pieces to your loved one’s favourite pop songs, rock anthems, or songs from a particular era of their life. We arrange the audio setup and can help curate a playlist from your suggestions.

Yes. Some families prefer a direct cremation followed by a memorial service at a date of their choosing. This is often useful when family members are travelling from overseas or when the family wants time to plan a more considered service. We can arrange this as two separate engagements.
